We had great neighbors that lived across the street while our kids were growing up. Lud had a fabulous model train room in the basement, and Lois was an expert on fossils. They were both retired but worked harder than anyone I know perfecting their flower and vegetable gardens. Ready to stop what they were doing to share their vast knowledge with the neighborhood kids made them local favorites.
When Lois was diagnosed with breast cancer, it was pretty emotional for everyone in the neighborhood. We all enjoyed these loving, kind neighbors and were sad to think of what was ahead of them. I don't know how I would handle such news if it was my diagnosis.
Lois and Lud responded to the news in a way none of us would have imagined. They went out and adopted two wonderful, energetic puppies. We were baffled! Didn't they realize life was going to get rough? Yep, that was why they brought their adorable puppies home. To fill their house with love and happiness. Those little guys were quite a humorous distraction during a hard time in our neighbors' lives. While cancer treatment still left her weak and feeling awful a lot of the time, Lois had her puppies romping around keeping a smile on her face.
Over a decade has passed since the puppies came home. Lois is healthy and still gardening with Lud. Still patiently sharing her life with those curious kids around her. The puppies have quieted down and don't cause as much havoc anymore. These dogs are still a blessing in the lives of their owners.
When life gets difficult, as we all know it will at times, we don't need to avoid life. At these times, it is even more important to find ways to make our lives richer. I am glad for the lesson from these courageous folks. Simplifying life is our first response to hardship. Maybe looking for joy is the better response.
In Him,
Joyful
