Encouragement

American Idol is about to start season 10 in a few weeks. This year will have a different feel because there will be all new judges except Mr. Randy Jackson. The appeal to watching the show was never about Simon or Paula or even Ellen, the draw to watch is the hope of people to become known for what they love doing, singing.

It amazes us all when someone steps up to sing and has the most awful voice. Where were their families and friends? Shouldn't these loved ones have been honest and let them know that they should not even open their throats to sing even in the shower? Oh I know some of them are performing for entertainment value only, so we can all have a good laugh. But some of the talentless performers are actually surprised that they are not chosen and often ridiculed.

As parents and teachers, we tell children that they can be and do anything they set their minds to. This is not exactly true. Sure with hard work we can accomplish great things and being motivated to put in effort is an important life lesson. But no matter how hard I try I will never be a brilliant engineer or singing sensation. That is not where my God given talents lie.

Maybe it is better for us to encourage and steer those we love into areas where they have real talent and with effort they will accomplish great things. Like the fly who keeps throwing himself against the closed window, sometimes trying harder and persistence is not going to get us where we want to go. There are times when we need to step back, assess our plan and look for another path forward. Maybe that fly can get outdoors where he desires to go if he backs up and goes through the open doorway.

Grownups know that anything kids pursue will be better achieved with effort and commitment. Those are the traits we need to encourage in everything they attempt. Who knows what one will be good at on the first try? It takes time to see if your abilities and desires come together for greatness. Even those who are mediocre at activities they truly love are blessed just by the doing.

The great thing to watch as these young people put it all on the line in front of these new judges is the reaction of those who are there to support them. Those they love hug them just as much if they get a Hollywood ticket or if they come out in tears. Love, support, and encouragement are key to us taking a chance on our dreams.

In Him,
Joyful
