Yes We Can, 10 Day Fast

Natalie and I are on an adventure. She encouraged me to watch 'Fat, Sick, and Dying' the documentary last weekend. It was powerful enough that we decided to purchase a juicer and begin the 10 day fast of fruit and vegetable juices. We each had our own reasons for committing to this challenging task.

My passionate daughter is a vegan. So for her you would think this would be easy. But the reality of not eating is tough. What a trooper! At day 5 she is still hanging in. Her reasons for committing are for general improved health and energy. As a bus assistant for children with physical and emotional needs, she has been sick more this fall than normal. Hopefully, this will build up her immune system.

For me it is about flushing out my lymph system as well as losing weight. Since June I have struggled with lymphedema. Lymph drainage doesn't seem to be making a difference. Before I go to another ENT or an endocrinologist I thought I would try adjusting my diet to see if that makes a difference. For my lymph system I am going to try to stay off dairy for another 2 weeks after the fast, to see if that is the problem.

Perhaps the other reason I have for doing this is even more personal. I just feel the need to prove my obedience and willpower. To be honest, this blog is a testament to me that I can stick with something in my life. Normally I am the one with great ideas and gusto at the beginning, but my sticking it out to the end attitude is lacking. So I need this 10 days to prove that I am a strong person who can change habits and do without for a few days.

So here we are on the morning of day 5, and I have not fallen off the fast for even an itsy Cheez-it cracker. Which was my greatest temptation so far. Even though this has been a really stressful week at work I have maintained. The juice is not bad tasting. I have been hungry a couple of times, but mostly it is the habit of eating that is hard to give up. Going out to eat with friends and family are a part of my normal routine, so I have had to find other activities to occupy myself. Yesterday, Natalie and I were amazing! We went to eat with my son, daughter-in-love, grandkids and hubby at our favorite breakfast spot. We drank our juice before we went. Not only did we not eat we cut up cinnamon rolls and pancakes for the little ones.

Believe me we are both planning what we will eat Friday night when the fast is over. Til then we can pray our way through the next 6 days and realize there are other blessings in life besides food.

  1. Hello Joyful, it has been awhile since I have been around so I have been catching up. Prayers for you and your daughter in your quest to do the fast for physical and spiritual health. Your post about your son was inspiring. I love the idea of your being grateful that he is your son. God blessed us with 6 beautiful hearts to care for and lead to him. Now there are 11 grands that are making their way in the world. Blessings to you and your entire family.

  5. I am so proud of you and your daughter....I really want to do this and have been thinking about it for quite some time, but haven't gotten up the courage....It's very hard for me to hold myself accountable....

You have made thus far so I am sure you will make it to the end....God is amazing when we will allow Him to help us....I need to follow my own words, uh?....

  6. Hi, I haven't seen the movie but I have a juicer and use it alot in the warmer weather. Both of my sil's and daughters juice, started after watching the movie, and love the benefits. I just like the idea of getting more pure food/juices but I also don't like throwing out all the pulp. Keep it up-I can't wait to hear how much weight you lost-if you share.

    1. 9 pounds so far. I did see a site where they show you how to use pulp to make chips with a dehydrator. We are sending ours to friends who have a compost pile.
