Test Scores Don't Define Us

Do test scores determine our children's worth? Should we as parents decide what our kids are capable of achieving or set limits for them based on a number? Not at all. A test, any test is a snapshot of what a person can do. Perhaps it is an indicator of interests, strengths and weak areas but it does not define a person.

Take sudoku, cell phone solitaire, and even Jinga as my illustration. I can play sudoku a hundred times  there will be days I am better and days I just can't seem to see the right patterns.  Many factors play a role as to how I perform on an assessment or in a game at any particular moment.

I am not saying we shouldn't test. They are most definitely indicators to help guide our teaching. But today I had a parent get back an IQ score and become a puddle of tears because she interpreted the scores to mean her child  is retarded. Her child was the same amazing kiddo before and after she read the test scores. The score may or may not be a good measure of this beloved child. But what truly matters is not the number in the report but how this individual maneuvers through life. Her true value is who she is and how she is loved by those around her, unlike test scores that never changes.

In Him,
Joyful

  1. i'm new to your blog and want to hear more of your story… especially your journey over the past year… but from what i've seen in a short few posts, your students are incredibly blessed to have someone celebrating their accomplishments and the parents have an incredible advocate in their child's corner. every student should be so blessed!
