Do you ever get the feeling that someone is watching you? How many times have you been zoning out and while staring at someone else? They probably get that sense and glance our way. I know I quickly avert my gaze so it doesn’t seem creepy that I was staring at them. Yesterday I had this feeling while I was doing my Bible study. I looked over at the window and there was a young deer staring in snooping in our house. When I made eye contact he quickly turned away. I was able to snap a picture just as he was leaving. It made me smile knowing that even the deer in my yard might be curious with what is in our house as well as feasting on our grass and cherries.
My visitor was only there for a moment and the picture I got was not the one I hoped for. I would much rather have captured our moment of seeing one another. But this pic will have to do. Ron and I live right on the park so often we sit on our back porch and watch soccer practices or families on the swings. There are regulars who come and throw a ball for their golden retriever twins that we enjoy watching. Living on the park lets us be that fly on the wall to observe others without getting caught. There are always joyful noises coming in our house from the park.
Seasons change and so does the activity at our park. School starts today so kids will not be at the park in the evening as much on weekdays. Winter time there are cross county skiers who practice at the park but few others want to sit on the frozen swings or slide down a frosty slide. The deer won’t be here as much in the winter either. Right now they are enjoying the fruit in our neighborhood. Funny how our town is just used to these visitors residing with us. Often I will see a few deer crossing the road in the middle of town and traffic. They are nonchalant with us and we are not surprised to see them on our streets or in our yards. That being said, it is not often I have had one observing me on my couch. That was definitely a special treat.
People watching is a joy whether at the mall, in a park, or just at a grocery store. I know our cousin, Clara, loves seeing the firemen at the store. But that is a blog for another time. What appeals to us is seeing life unfold. Having a small window into the lives of others. I especially love to go for evening walks so I can glance into homes where families are having dinner or just living life together. It is fun to imagine the conversations that are taking place in the comfort of their homes. So I am okay with my deer friend peeking in my window. In fact, I hope he realized that not only is my yard a safe place but that inside our walls there is joy. Perhaps that is taking it a bit too far.
In Him,
Joyful
