Oh how I miss those days of running kids from field to field and the friendships we shared as we cheered them on. There was a different tone to track and wrestling where kids sat in the stands with us until their turn to perform than team sports like football and soccer where the kids were on the field. Parents bonded but I so enjoyed getting to know the kiddos better and hear them interact and encourage one another. My kids tried everything and so I learned to understand sports I would never have been interested in on my own. Rugby has a hooker but I let my sons play anyway.
One regret I have from the years gone by as our calendar was full of sports practice, games, school concerts and doctors appointments is that I threw those calendars away at the end of the year. Oh how I wish I could flip through those months and remember all the bustle of activity that was my life.
Four kids keep you busy. It is fun to see my grown kids filling their days and weeks with their own kiddos schedules. Seasons change and my days are less busy now. Ronnie B and I have time to walk up to Starbucks for breakfast or hop in the rv on a whim and travel to the mountains. This week there are doctor appointments to get to but those are not for chicken pox or strep throat but hearing aids, old age aches and pains. Medicare paperwork may be involved.
I miss having a home full of kids but enjoy this season of life. I miss teaching my heart students but I love spending time with Ronnie B and my friends. I miss the exhaustion of motherhood with four under five years old~~~nope I can’t say I miss the exhaustion. But memories of the joy and laughter and even the bickering brings a smile. Making my kids hug each other when they fought only to find out they were saying ugly things to one another. Then there was the punishment of wearing whitey tighties when they misbehaved. Mom’s get pretty creative while raising a herd of kids who combined think of every kind of mischief.
So my advice to you is to save your calendars whether they are on the wall or printed off your devices. It is fun to recall just all that we accomplish as a family with kids or without. Now Ron and I keep journals of our trips, I write this blog and we gather local prints to have everyone sign and frame for the walls of our house.
In Him,
Joyful
