Ron and I just got invited to Pack 20's Blue and Gold Banquet. Cub Scouts is having its 100th Blue and Gold ceremony, and they invited us as past leaders of the Pack. When our boys were young Ron and I had the privilege of standing in front of the Pack and running the show. Ron was the Cub Master, and I was the Awards and Committee Chair. Ron ran the meetings, and I got to give out the awards. I think you can guess who had the best job! 8-)
At our Blue and Gold Banquet there was always a cake contest. This assured that we would have wonderful desserts to eat at the end of the meal. All the scouts got decked out in their uniforms with their hard earned badges proudly sewn in place. Parents got dressed up, and even the local police officers came as our honored guests. This was a big deal in our little town.
One thing about the Blue and Gold Banquet was always a guarantee. The Barbers would win the Most Chocolate category of the cake contest. My job was to bake the biggest cake possible and the boys and Ron spent a whole month's grocery budget on chocolates to decorate their cake. Needless to say, it had to be big to be able to fit all the chocolate candy. They put Hershey Miniatures, Reese's Cups, Butterfingers, and of course M&Ms. They even decorated the plywood board that proudly displayed their chocolate masterpieces with chocolate candy.
In the 7 years we led Pack 20 and the 7 cake contests we entered, the Barber Boys won Most Chocolate every time! What an accomplishment. The cakes and stomach aches may fade from our memories, but the excitement and enthusiasm is fresh in our minds. To be honest, it was the best "grocery money" we ever spent!
Can't wait to see the cakes this year. I better take my camera.
In Him,
Joyful
