Wait! What? I just read your wall on Facebook. Why didn't you call me? The new social communication is just that. social not personal. With all the new technology for communicating, people get misunderstood and get their feelings hurt unintentionally all the time. Someone sends a text as they step into the shower and when the other person responds and doesn't receive an answer back right away, wonders if they are being ignorted. Or a text is sent and the recipient isn't able to check it right away. Either way the assumption is that the sender is being ignored, when the reality may be totally innocent.
Tone of voice, facial expressions and a multitude of other face to face communication clues on what feelings are behind the words are lost in our new personal device communicating system.
So what do we do? Pick up the phone, meet for coffee, or just hang out for a glass of wine. I remember my mother and father-in-law used to spend hours 'having a cup of coffee'. It was just spending time together face to face across the table. The coffee was just a prop. The gift was just in being together.
