The Best Way Out Is Always Through, Right Mom?

Strength is going through breast cancer after losing your husband to lung cancer without overwhelming fear. My mom could never understand why we, the younger generation who are now all reaching senior citizen status, research things to death. When she was diagnosed with breast cancer a dozen years ago she just followed her trusty doctor's advice and had a mastectomy 3 days later.  She showed all of us around her what courage and faith are all about. My Mom never thought about dying, God was with her and she felt protected. Her belief was that she was going to be okay no matter what the outcome. As far as getting a second opinion went she wanted to proceed with treatment and had every confidence that her doctor knew what he was talking about and was perfectly capable of taking care of her.

As they were wheeling her into surgery she joked that she would be losing 3 pounds in the next couple of hours. What were we going to be doing? Mom has always been a small framed lady with giant melons that weighed her down. She never got sad over taking the weight off her chest, not to mention her shoulders. Her recovery was a speedy one because her attitude was so terrific. No pity party for this brave lady! Chemo was hard and had to be postponed a couple of times for her to get her strength back but she was a trooper through all of it.

Mom has always just rolled up her sleeves when life put boulders in her path. Some would say she doesn't need us to support her. The fact is she believes she is supported by her faith, family, and friends and so doesn't worry about getting through.

I have a plaque in my bedroom that hung in my kitchen for years that I love. It is actually a greeting card with a quote from Robert Frost that says, "The best way out is always through." This is so true and my mom is proof that when life knocks you down you just have to get up and back on the path with one foot in front of the other. Life is not always easy but it is do~able with our loved ones and the One who loves us no matter what.

In Him,
Joyful

  2. LOL! You are the only person I know who would proudly hang a plague (is that like the black plague??) in their kitchen! Maybe you can kill it with windex...and then replace it with a plaque?
