Felix shocked his parents when I asked him what the red planet is called and he answered mars. It is so fun to watch little sponges suck up knowledge and concepts. Spending time with eleven month old Millie and then coming home to two and a half year old Felix just makes me in awe of all they are learning. As a retired special ed teacher it makes me so excited that they both have such great working memories and the ability to grasp new concepts. I not only see them as their Noni but also marvel at their intelligence. Their personalities shine through so young. What a gift to spend time with wee ones.
What I was thinking as I sit here on my spot doing Bible study sipping my coffee, is that we continue to add knowledge throughout life. Don’t get me wrong. My memory has lost quite a few facts as I age but I also know things today that I didn’t know a month ago. Life unfolds and we grow. Nobody may be there to clap and cheer when I glean something new from God’s word or from life but it grows me.
When do we get to the point that we learn not for praise but for ourselves? I guess we are all different. Some need book clubs to challenge them while absorbing text. Others prefer to read on their own. That is why there are meet up groups for all sorts of interests and zoom meetings to discuss such a variety of topics. Last night, Ronnie B was on a zoom meeting discussing a paper on archeology that was written thirty years ago. It was kind of cool being a fly on the wall listening to their discussion. They learned more from sharing their thoughts than if they would have read it independently. I tend to do Bible study alone. I wish I was one who went to a group but it has never been me. I am sure there is much I lose out on by not attending.
If you think you have lost the ability to learn, you are mistaken. I’m pretty sure you are driving a car with a computer, reading this on a device and have realized that people text more than they call. Heck even how { cook is different. My instant and rice cooker make life much easier. So does the electronic igniter on my gas stove that keeps me from having to locate matches to warm my tortillas.
Working memory is so important for little one’s learning. We work to develop it so they get even better at retaining information. Then in our senior years we have to work on keeping our memory sharp so we don’t lose what we have. What a circle of life we live. Our kiddos make us smile and to be truthful us old folks make others smile when we can’t seem to recall something. Good thing we have others to remind us of what we forget. That is their way of cheering us on just different somehow.
In Him,
Joyful
