"Love is given, not earned" means that true love is freely offered and bestowed upon someone, not something that needs to be achieved or "earned" through specific actions or behaviors; it's a gift you give unconditionally.
When we hold a newborn in our arms, our heart fills with love. That is the unconditional love God has for us. This sweet baby did nothing to deserve your love but has it. Later, we applaud those first steps even when they fall over and over again. The joy that first steps brings is real even though they are wobbly at best. Soon we celebrate their potty training, first soccer game and eventually grit our teeth as they get behind the wheel of the family car. These accomplishments and milestones aren’t what causes us to love. The love is there tucked in our hearts for one another.
Agape love is often associated with God our Father. But our love for one another is always striving to be unconditional as well. It is hard to not hold a grudge or feel hurt and angry at the actions of others. But when we settle and put ourselves in their place, often we can see the intentions of their hearts.
Loving unconditionally is not in our human nature but something we strive toward as we spend time in Jesus’ agape love for us. To know that there is nothing we can do to earn or destroy His love is hard to wrap our heads around. But that is the love He has and how He wants us to love. Whenever a controversy arises and it is asked how do we deal with it………..the answer is love.
In Him,
Joyful
