Come for Coffee or a Beer. Yep, that is Volunteering to Show Up

Lend a hand here or there. Don’t just donate my money but my time and talent. This year my word is serve. That means getting off my couch and contributing whenever and wherever a need arises. This is difficult for me since I have trauma induced autism……my coined phrase for how I stepped out of social after losing Ryan. What I know is that I want to serve others and be involved but it takes saying yes when my heart wants to stay in the no and isolate. So how do I get back on the horse and serve? One yes at a time. This season of showing up whether on a one time only or on a calendar repeat is only possible if I am intentional.

Where do you put others first? In church, community, family all of these are opportunities to step up. Yesterday was a day of meeting new people that crossed Ronnie B and my path. In the morning we went for coffee and met Cindy who is here caring for her older aunt. She is looking to move here permanently and wants to build friendships. This morning she is coming to our home for coffee. Yes I did say yes and step out of my comfort zone.

Last night we went out for Taco Tuesday at our local tub and met a family who also intends to move here. The eighty year old great grandma is looking for a group of women who like to gather for an occasional beer. She hit the jackpot. I am going to take her next Monday to the Tubbies group. I rarely go but love that this group includes me in their texts and activities. Sandra will enjoy meeting new ladies and getting out. She lives with her granddaughter’s family and loves it. But she also needs friends her own age and the Tubbies are an incredibly inclusive group. It is fun getting together with Christian women in their 60s, 70s, and 80s who appreciate a drink or two while chatting away.

Volunteering doesn’t always mean helping someone lug furniture during a move or shoveling snow from a driveway. Sometimes volunteering is welcoming a new person into your home or your life. Who knows, you may just be making a new lifelong friend.

In Him,

Joyful
