Freezer Foil Cash

Chicken noodle soup has always been my mom's comfort food. So today I made a big pot of soup for her. Problem is she had way too much food in her freezer. We rolled up our sleeves and cleaned her fridge and freezer together. Do companies realize how they scare us with their expiration dates on everything from salad dressings to lunchmeats? WOW!

Her freezer was full of little bits of twisted aluminum foil. Mystery? No, she explained that she puts her extra money in there to keep it safe from fire and thiefs. As we unwrapped foil after foil the money kept piling up. $2700. was finally laid out on the dining room table. WOW! All this hidden cash was more shocking than the ancient expiration dates we encountered. 25 years worth of scrimping and saving and doing without.

What to do with all this money was the next question. Mom assured me she had plenty and there was nothing she needed to do with it. Then she decided to split it between her grandkids. So we loaded up the cold cash and headed for the bank to get cashier's checks.

When we got to the bank,  the teller asked me to write down the names of the recipients. As I began listing starting with the oldest, Todd, and continuing down to Natalie. Trouble was after Cameron should have been Ryan before Tanner. Moments like that can still reduce me to a puddle of tears at the heartache Ryan's death has left with all of us. Mom and I hugged and emotionally finished the list of her grandkids.

She assured me Ryan is not forgotten and that she wanted to put some of the money in his memorial fund for Lissa's college. Perfect!

That was the most expensive soup and cleanup ever. It is wonderful how excited Mom is about the chance to bless her family with these little foil wrappers.

She wrote a sweet note to each grandchild that she was taking this forgotten 'cold cash' and putting it in their 'hot hands' to use as they wish.

What a lovely distraction God gave us as we await tomorrow and news of what will need to be done with the mass they found in Mom's abdomen. He is always there to guide us in ways we cannot even imagine. From cooking soup to generous giving. WOW!

In Him,
Joyful
