Grandpa Peabody was lovingly creative with my Grandma even during her alzheimer's years. We have a wonderful picture of her throwing her head back with joy while sitting on Santa's lap beside Grandpa during one of their mall walks. Walking at the mall when it was too hot to walk outside in the Phoenix heat kept her amused with people watching while they both stayed healthy. Grandpa also had a big bag of pecans that he would throw out in the back yard and they would joyfully gather them up a couple times a day. Good for the waistline he would chuckle.
The other smart thing grandpa would do was to give his lovely wife a stack of family pictures rather than a photo album. With an album when she got to the end she would just sit there with her hands folded. Having a stack of pictures, she could just keep enjoying them for hours.
Amazingly, grandma couldn't remember us or if she had eaten or not but she could play the organ beautifully until her final days. That was a gift she continued to give grandpa. A gift he gave her was to keep the artificial Christmas tree up year round. She always loved the tree and all the ornaments had held fond memories for her. So while she was not gathering nuts or strolling hand in hand at the mall, Grandma could sit in her living room and enjoy the twinkling lights of her tree.
Grandpa and Grandma continued to laugh and make each other smile even through those hard years. What a gift they both are to each of us.
In Him,
Joyful
