A birthday, a celebration, a day when you were born is supposed to be joyful. When we look back over our lives we hold moments close to our hearts that make us feel loved. What about those who don't feel special because people around them never quite step out of their own selfishness to put others first? Sadness, disappointment can overwhelm us at times when we are overlooked or underloved.
Kids build up their special day and then if the right peers don't show up or their parents can't or choose not to lift them up they crumble. Today was a birthday for thousands. Some rejoiced in their day and relished being the center of attention for a day, a week, or in all ways. Others went to bed in tears with the feeling of their own unimportance swirling in their heads.
Adults today are more self focused than when I was a kid. As families have unraveled parents have more responsibilities and less for their own children. A week on, a week off is not the way to parent and not the way to love a child. Focusing on finding the 'right one' on dating sites puts the focus on me not you. Kids need to know that they are the most important person in someone's life. It matters. Birthdays matter. Being the center of attention occasionally matters.
