Just Send The Card

Christmas card etiquette should not be followed. I know that sounds bossy but I have a reason. Many of the Christmas Card/address books come with columns for several years of sent and received spots to check off. In our family if you sent and did not receive a card in 3 years then you stopped sending them. Don't do that, please.

I sent cards this year but when Ron and I were separated for 6 years I never sent a single card. Because of my lack of checks in the received column of some friends and families books I got dropped from their list. In fact, I have friends who send cards to my mom and not to me. Wait, they are my friends?

Tis the season to be forgiving and giving so send a card forever whether you get one back or not. I have thrown out my book with the check list and just send cards to everyone in my address book.

There may be a good reason that you are not receiving a card from a loved one. Maybe life is too hard to pick up the pen or maybe they don't have the funds to send one. Either way, your card may be the bright spot and connection they need in a rough time. I know the cards I received during Ryan's death and my marriage difficulties meant so much.

People need love even when they don't deserve it. Send a card even if you don't receive one. It matters.

In Him,
Joyful

  1. I could not agree more. I've heard of people doing that and only sending a card to someone if they get one from them first. Well, if everyone waited to get one before they sent one then nobody would ever get one at all!

I'm a huge card person and I am finding it a little heartbreaking that sending them in the mail seems to be becoming a thing of the past. I just ordered myself a new card assortment and have vowed to send more cards throughout the year for birthdays and just because.

Also, I keep cards forever and ever. I got so many when Darin died and each and every one of them meant the world to me. I think I have every single card that has been given to me for the past 18 years.

  2. I don't know why but I haven't sent out Christmas cards since I got divorced 9 years ago. I buy Christmas cards but don't send them.
I used to do the Christmas letter, the cards... the whole thing.
This year, I got very few Christmas cards. It made me feel lonely a little. I had to keep reminding myself that I hadn't sent any out in many years.
YOU send me cards at work even when it's not Christmas. I don't tell you how much I appreciate that. But I do.
Always know that I love you.

  3. Hi there, What a thought provoking post, you've got me chewing on this. There have been times in our lives when we've continued to pursue friendships, with long time friends, only to never hear back from them. At some point, I've stopped trying to connect because it seemed obvious they didn't want to continue-but now you've really made me think about this. With the internet these days, it is easy to send out greetings via email. Thanks for sharing your heart with us, you've given me something to ponder.
    Hugs, Noreen
