One Ply Toilet Paper and Political Views

Proverbs 26:12-14 The Passion Translation (TPT)

12 There’s only one thing worse than a fool,
and that’s the smug, conceited man
always in love with his own opinions.

Some shout their views from their social media platforms, condemning anyone who dares to disagree with their side. Others silently seethe as they listen to those misguided ones who disagree with how they view the world. We are gearing up for another divisive America as the presidential election begins to approach. What we need to remember there is always truth to both sides of an issue. We all have different backstories that contribute to why we feel the way we feel. Finally, America has prospered under Democrat and Republican rule. The sky is not falling if our side is not victorious. 

What we don’t need to do is type in all caps, unfriendly those who are not in line with our thinking or believe that we will change each other’s minds if we are just loud enough. What we do need to do is take a breath, love one another, avoid sensitive topics and have confidence that life will go on after this election win or lose. 

I don’t want to be a fool spouting my opinions as if they are the only truths. Thank God I am not in charge because I screw up even the simplest of things. For example, I have been buying toilet paper for decades. A couple months ago I bought one ply instead of two ply. Ron and I have been thinking we will never get to the end of this mistake. I swear this toilet paper is multiplying just to mess with us. In college we swore we would never have cheap toilet paper again. Those were the days we were so poor we stole TP from the science building. Some would say we could just recycle this one ply nightmare while others would say just use the damn paper and quit whining. My solution was to give the rest of it away to a friend who was grateful for the free TP that she didn’t have to steal. Not that she would steal. 

See in my mind there is no way I would buy one ply on purpose. Yet, they sell one ply so obviously there are people who not only buy it but prefer it. I guess even in toilet paper choices I am not the expert. Who knew. 

Whether it is TP, toothpaste, or what kind of dish soap we choose, there are a variety of brands because there is no right or wrong choice. So why do we try to condemn others for having different opinions than us? Guess in some ways we are all fools. I know I am guilty of being smug in my views. I need to be intentional about having a more open mind. That being said, I will be more diligent when picking my toilet paper.
