How is your heart? We spend time being kind to others but what about ourselves? Did you look in the mirror this morning while you were brushing your teeth and take in the incredible person you have become or did you find fault with your wrinkles and flaws? We find it noble to be accepting of others, compliment the people around us. Just encouraging and supporting them no matter their missteps or imperfections. Why aren't we as kind to ourselves. Is it that we don't want to boast or be perceived as self involved? Or is it that we use a harsher measuring stick when it comes to ourselves?
Matthew 22:39 Love your neighbor as yourself.
That verse is assuming that you treat yourself better than others and so should treat others with the same kindness. But first we must love ourselves. How do we accomplish that? Look through the eyes of Jesus and see who He sees when He looks at us. His love for us is unconditional and his focus is not on our blemishes but on our heart. He doesn't misunderstand our intentions but embraces us for who we are. If He can so love me how can I not love myself?
Think about your family and friends and how they perceive you.Your grandson doesn't see your extra pounds but is comfy on grandma's squishy lap just spending giggle time with you. Your husband would rather take a walk hand in hand with you than stay home and admire your spotless kitchen. Your neighbor would rather you stop by for coffee and a chat than admire your well groomed yard.
We all fall short of the ideals we impose on ourselves. Our to do lists are longer than spending time enjoying life. Focusing on where we fall short doesn't get us to loving ourselves. We would not be so critical of others as we are of ourselves. So let's make a pact to put our name at the top of the things we love list. Get a mental list of our successes rather than our failures. Begin seeing me through the eyes of loved ones and the God who created me and loves me in spite of the stumbles along my path.
In Him,
Joyful
