North to Alaska and the Great Togetherness of the Yellow Submarine

Ron and I watched a two hour video of our trip to Alaska. We took two months and crammed seven of us in our nineteen foot camper van. Ryan and Cam were teenagers and my Mom was with us so we were pretty snug traveling so far for so long. It was so healing to watch everyone interact, play cards and just be together. It made me so glad that we spent that summer together exploring as a family. The sceney was spectacular, the wildlife was a bit up close and personal at times, and the food was delicious. The boys fished and we ate fish until we began to grow fins. Mosquito nets covered our faces not exactly the fashion statement our teens preferred.

Watching the video amazed me. How did we all get along for so long with so little space. Maybe Ron edited out or never filmed the frustrating moments but this was togetherness that most would not appreciate. But these moments we shared are so precious. What an adventure. What an experience to travel, sleep, explore together as a family. This has prompted us to get out more videos to watch and remember. Now we are motivated to convert them so we can share with our kids and their families.

Natalie and Nate came over and we rewatched the video together. It was fun hearing Natalie remember and share with Nate her memories. What we all recognized is that these have great value to us but that even a generation from now they won't be appreciated. The videos they are currently taking of Felix will be the ones he will want to play and share with his future family. Regardless of the value to others, these scratchy old tapes are such a gift. What a shame we have spent more time on watching the news rather than making new memories in this season and recalling the times that brought us here to where we are. I feel so fortunate to have shared life with my Ronnie B. who loves his family, our life, and getting me out to see the world even cozy in a 1975 camper van. Retro is in so we are even more hip now than when we headed north in 2000.

In Him,

Joyful
